La Belle Maison

Belle Maison outside

La Belle Maisonis a very welcoming, lovingly, restored 1800s French self-catering farmhouse that sleeps up to 8 people and sits within its own area of the secluded hamlet ‘Le Bois de Pommeau’, on the outskirts of the medieval town of Confolens.

The hamlet is reached down a maintained track leading to a large courtyard and has glorious views across the valley in all directions with the River Goire winding its way around the base of the hill the hamlet nestles atop. Much larger than its sister house, La Petite Maison, La Belle Maison is also constructed in the traditional, local method with very thick stone walls and a ‘pantile’ roof which help keep the house cool in summer. Inside the walls are hand plastered with the occasional revealed stone, known locally as ‘pierre apparent’ all offset by magnificent, ancient wooden beams creating that special French character.

The Living Room is open plan with sitting area and linked dining room with triple aspect windows (north, east and south facing). There is a stone floor to help keep the room cool and a lovely wood burning stove with the ancient bread oven featured behind which are offset beautifully by the original wooden beams and wall divides. The room is well furnished with spacious, comfy sofas, cushions, coffee table and large dining table seating eight. Handcrafted wooden stairs lead to the first floor galleried landing.

To help keep you entertained if you need to escape the sun there is English and French free to air TV, DVD and BlueRay players, a Wii with two controllers and selection of games and we also provide a wide range of English books, board games, puzzles and playing cards – something to suit everyone and all age ranges. There is Wi-Fi broadband connection at the house.

Belle downstairs bedroom

Downstairs Master Bedroom with its double aspect windows (east and west facing the gardens) and ensuite shower room, this lovely bedroom offers a tranquil retreat. There is a double bed, bedside cabinets with drawers, bedside lamps, a wardrobe with hanging space and further shelf space, a full length mirror, hair dryer and cooling fan. The ensuite offers a large modern walk in shower (Italian style), WC and hand basin. There is also a shaving/magnifying mirror and heated towel rail.

Belle kitchen
The spacious, traditional-style kitchen has double aspect windows (south and west facing the gardens) with a smaller table and chairs providing a perfect spot for relaxing for those smaller, more casual meals. Double doors lead to the semi-covered terrace which, when left opened, provide a lovely cooling breeze into the room.

This well-equipped, handcrafted, oak kitchen has plenty of cupboard space as well as a beautiful matching dresser. There is a multi-ringed, range-style, gas cooker with large oven, a fridge-freezer, kettle, coffee maker and toaster for all your cooking needs with all the crockery, cutlery, pots, pans and cooking tools you need provided– if you feel anything is missing just ask.

Next to the kitchen there is the bonus of a utility room with sink area and best of all a dishwasher to help prevent arguments over who is washing and drying. The washing machine ensures your clothes are kept clean too with a large drying line in the garden where washing will dry faster than you think and there is also a “Sheila Maid”; a traditional, suspended clothes airer for extra, indoor, drying. To ensure you have everything you may need there is also a microwave, iron and ironing board with a wash basket and pegs. Space enough in here for coats, shoes and empty suitcases too!

Also on the ground floor there is a convenient, well-presented downstairs WC with hand basin.

Leading off the light and airy, galleried landing with exposed beams are a further three nicely appointed bedrooms and a spacious family bathroom. The first floor has a beautiful wooden floor and sensational apex ceiling and exposed roof beams. Each bedroom has electric fans to cool the balmy summer night air and mosquito nets on the windows to keep any pests at bay.

First floor 1
Together with the triple single beds with side tables and lamps, there is a large wardrobe with hanging space and shelving and a lovely handmade mirror.

Belle first floor 2
In this room there is a comfortable double bed with two side tables with lamps. The capacious wardrobe also has shelves, providing plenty of clothes storage. The huge mirror and hand-restored dressing table and chair in front of the chimney breast detail create a very charming and relaxing room.

Belle first floor 3

The smallest of the bedrooms contains a gem of a lovingly, hand-restored, wooden French antique ¾ bed with side table and lamp. There is a wooden drawer and shelf unit and again that lovely chimney breast detail creating a room hard to resist.

The modern family bathroom is spacious with a bath with integrated tiled shower, WC and hand basin. The mirror here has an electric shaving point. There are storage shelves and an emergency only First Aid Kit – just in case. There is continuous hot water so not even a group of teenage girls can run out!

To keep your suitcases as small and light as possible – swimwear and sun tan lotion aren’t heavy after all, we provide all pillows, duvets and all bed linen, hand and shower towels too. However, we do request you bring your own swimming pool/beach towels.
A modern cot and highchair can also be provided, free of charge, but please bring your own cot linen.
*Please note that there are no stair gates or other child-safety equipment provided.

There is ample parking for three cars right next to the farmhouse and a private, enclosed garden mostly laid to lawn but with attractive planting and a children’s play area. In summer, with the glorious Charente weather, (the highest number of sunshine hours after La Côte d’Azure) most of your time at the farmhouse will be spent outside enjoying your private garden; you can relax on one of the sun loungers if you prefer a more horizontal and sunny position or find one of the shady benches in the garden and sit and enjoy the magnificent views across the valley.
Belle outside 1
Meals can be taken sitting at the table and chairs on the semi covered terrace with BBQ area for outdoor dining whilst enjoying the amazing west facing views over the valley and the glorious sunsets. Colourful, outdoor lighting transform the area for evening and night time outdoor relaxing.

Feeling more energetic? Then why not play one of the outdoor games provided; including a full size table tennis table, badminton and, of course, the traditional French game of pétanque (boules). There is plenty of room to lose any excess energy you or the kids may have!

Whilst in the garden check out the gorgeous view across the valley and the spectacular tree line on the horizon while the buzzards play on the thermals at all hours of the day but most glorious at sunset, watching a powerful French storm or as the occasional early morning mists drift slowly through the valley.

New for summer 2016, the wooden framed, private, above ground splash pool is 5,3m x 3,3m and 1,22m deep.

Chlorinated and sand filtered it benefits from solar heating and a night insulation cover. Please note that we cannot guarantee the temperature of the pool but during the summer high season, the water temperature is an average of 26° centigrade. The pool has removable external steps for child safety and an internal aluminium ladder for a more graceful entry and exit. Hours of fun, splashing and laughter or a relaxing place to float and chill out, or maybe just cool down whilst enjoying the beautiful views.
